Region: Cotes de Roussillon Villages
Vineyard: Domaine Cazes
Variety: Syrah, Grenache, Mourverdre
Reviewer: Malcolm Jolley

The Cazes family were pioneers in the move from sweet wines to vin de pays in France's Southwest region of Roussillon, and the Alter is a lovely wine at a great price. For a 2003 it's still showing firm tannins and could be put down for a few years and benefits from decanting. This SGM has the spicy notes and lots of deep, deep red fruit. There's not garrigue, but there is certainly earthiness. For all of those strong flavours, it has a reasonable ABV of 13.5%: crying for food like a rare steak.
