Overview

The Albada is a complete fruit bomb and a powerful wine at 14.5% alcohol by volume. But it's really well made and is retailing around North America for well under $20, which makes it enough of a value for the Wine Advocate to give it a 90 point rating (Jay Miller).

The Albada will make an excellent house wine for the cold winter months as it's deeply flavoured with cherries and a hint of cedary wood and vanilla from American oak barrels - but for only 8 months, which is not long by Iberian standards. The vines, says the maker Bodega Virgen de la Sierra from the center of Spain, are 45 years old. The older vines must temper the hot sun and agressive wine making: there is subtlety to its punch. More Bruce Lee than Rocky Balboa.
