Overview

Chianti used to be a bargain - it's what I often drank as an undergrad. Then, suddenly it was impossible to get a bottle for less than $25. The Gabbiano is a DOCG which retails for between $10 and $15 throughout North America. And it's lovely wine that tastes of Tuscany: red fruit, some earthiness, maybe even leather. It has a nicely moderate alcohol level (just under 13%), which matches it nicely to a bit of chilli in a bowl of beans, or steak marinade. It does well by early opening and/or decanting, but can outclass many wines $10 more expensive.
