Barbera was, until recently, the paesano grape of the northern Italian province of Piedmont. It was drunk young and harsh by the sort of people who changed the oil in the tractors on the vineyards that produce $100 bottles of Barolo and $30 of Barbaresco. Ah... but all boats are rising with the new tide of estate wine making and the 2004 Bricco dei Guazzi from the easternmost Piedmontese DOC of Montferrato is a tangy, fruity, pleasure. Not one stave of oak has touched this wine, and it's a little young on the nose, but complex on the palate. This is the sort of red wine that calls for a long Sunday lunch with friends.
