Are we over-regulated when it comes to alcohol consumption and distribution?

Are we over-regulated when it comes to alcohol consumption and distribution? In many parts of the world, people distill their own alcohol and it brings entire communities together in celebration. Is there a common ground North Americans could find where we could embrace the old-world traditions while ensuring the safety of our citizens? Or are things fine the way they are? Have your say.

That is a tough one. I would say yes when it comes to the drinking age and the studies which show that teen alcohol abuse is higher in countries where the exposure to alcohol is restricted to adults. I have always thought we were a little too strict here in North America versus Eurpe. In terms of alcohol distribution, I would say that the system we have now is fine. You need to have someone controlling the distribution to a degree. Otherwise it could lead to quality issues.

See my post under cheese is the same thing. It is time we started looking back to the old-school artisan methods..

It doesn't matter if we are over-regulated or not, the LCBO is never going to go away or give up it's monopoly.

I had heard a few years back that the LCBO was going to start testing private sales with a few limited suppliers - namely gourmet grocers like whole foods. Whatever happened to that? either way, I agree we have too many rules. When the rules hiner people from making a living in the biz, then it is time to take a look at why we have them to begin with.
