Type: Berries

Raspberries are a type of berry and part of the fruit and nut family.  They are known for their bright red color and sweet juice. Traditionally, raspberries are known as being a mid-summer crop, and need ample sun and water for growth.  They grow on a thorny bush and when picked, are released from their stem as individual fruit "cups" with a hollow center, unlike a blackberry.  The flowers of this bush are a major source of nectar for bees in the production of honey.

Raspberries are a common ingredient in jams, pies, and dessert squares.  In jam, they are prepared as either a preserve or as "freezer jam".  They can also be dried for incorporation into granola bars, cereals, and trail mix.
