Ricardo's latest cookbook (which has been a bestseller in French in his home province of Quebec) is a beautiful and distinctly Canadian tour de force. The 'every occasion' gimmick (as in "Oh no, the boss is coming to dinner") actually works and the photography and art direction feel authentic and relaxed, just like the family friendly, but still sophisticated recipes. Quilt Pie with Asparagus,  Eggs and Ham is really just the latter two over the former laid out like a quilt - but it looks really cool! And the pictures of Ricardo's adventures in Quebec are so refreshing after so many images of Provence and Tuscany. Could cookbooks be the ultimately successful bridge between the two solitudes?
